New Jersey

New Jersey Employment Profile

Located in the BLS New York-New Jersey region, the Garden State is known for tourism in Atlantic City and Jersey Shore, proximity to New York City, shipping ports, and major pharmaceutical firms. Despite a much slower recovery from the recession relative to other states, New Jersey has recently shown evidence the labor market and residential construction is gaining momentum. On the downside, deeply troubled state finances continue to limit New Jersey’s economic growth. (Source: Wells Fargo Securities, LLC)

Based on 2013 statistics, the government sector employs the greatest percentage of workers in the state, followed by health care and social assistance; retail trade; professional and technical services; and finance and insurance, respectively. The largest employers in the state (as of December 2013) include the New Jersey State Government, Wakefern Food Corporation (ShopRite), Wal-Mart Stores Inc., Verizon Communications, United Parcel Services (UPS), Johnson & Johnson, United Continental Holdings, The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company (A&P), The Home Depot, and Caesars Entertainment Corporation (formerly Harrah’s Entertainment, LLC.
