State of Arizona Demographics

The Grand Canyon State may be shaking its image as a haven for snowbirds and retirees. It’s still hot in Arizona, but perhaps the heat is shifting, as the State makes a concerted effort to encourage innovation and entrepreneurship. The Arizona Commerce Authority has made recent strides in attracting innovative startup companies such as GoDaddy, ZocDoc and others, with no plans to slow down anytime soon.


The latest employment scorecard for the State of Arizona for 2016-2017 is listed below, based on data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Arizona’s labor force participation and unemployment rates were relatively flat from August 2016-August 2017, but its labor force had a healthy 1.88% increase over the same annual time period. Based on 2013 statistics from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the government sector employs the greatest percentage of workers in the state, followed by health care and social assistance; retail trade; administrative and waste services; and accommodation and food services, respectively.

The largest employers in the state include the State of Arizona, Wal-Mart, Banner Health, the City of Phoenix, Wells Fargo, Maricopa County, Arizona State University, Intel Corporation, JP Morgan Chase & Company, and Bank of America. (Source: Merritt Research Services, LLC)
