State of Florida Demographics

Located in the southeastern tip of the United States, the Sunshine State is highly dependent on tourism to keep its economy afloat. It also relies on agriculture, aerospace industry, banking and biotech.

Based on 2013 statistics, the retail trade sector employs the greatest percentage of workers in the state, followed by health care and social assistance; government and government enterprise; accommodation and food services; and administrative and waste services, respectively. The latest employment scorecard for the State of Florida for August 2016 to August 2017 is listed below, based on data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Florida’s labor force grew at a healthy 2.54 percent annual rate, and its unemployment rate fell to 4.0 percent. Despite its attractiveness as a retiree destination, Florida’s labor force participation rate actually increased slightly from August 2016 to August 2017. Florida’s labor force participation rate is still a low 59.5%, but this is a figure that, given the fact of and desire for retirees to move to Florida and spend their retiree dollars, is in large part by design. You can view what jobs are available in Florida, as well as which sectors of the economy are growing most quickly, on our Job Listings page.
