Hawaii, the 50th state to join the United States, conjures up images of beaches and luaus. Indeed, the State’s beautiful landscape and island setting attracts over 8 million visitors per year. According to the Hawaii Tourism Authority, “tourism is the single source of private capital into Hawaii economy and significant export for the U.S. economy.”
Based on 2013 statistics, the government and government enterprise sector employs the greatest percentage of workers in the state, followed by accommodation and food services; retail trade; health care and social assistance; and administrative and waste services, respectively. The latest employment scorecard for the State of Hawaii for August 2016 to August 2017 is listed below, based on data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Hawaii’s employment scorecard was fairly flat and unchanged during this time period. The labor force grew slightly, by 0.49 percent, and the labor force participation rate was basically flat, holding at a healthy 62.9 percent. The unemployment rate did drop 0.4 percent, to a very low 2.6 percent. The overall takeaway is a fairly healthy employment, but one that may lake dynamism. The unemployment rate was basically flat.
