State of Maine Demographics

Located in the New England region of the U.S., Maine is the oldest state in the nation by median age. Due to this advancing age structure, Maine faces workforce development challenges in terms of reallocating not only the types of jobs available, but also the performance requirements. If employers are not able to find enough staff, or staff with the appropriate education and skills, Maine will experience slowing labor force growth. (Source: Maine Department of Labor)

Based on 2013 statistics, the healthcare and social assistance sector employs the greatest percentage of workers in the state, followed by government, retail trade, accommodation and food services; and manufacturing, respectively.
